One of my biggest takeaways from this course is that every student deserves the opportunity to see themselves as a mathematician. Equity in mathematics does not mean giving every student the exact same instruction or assignment. Students have different backgrounds, experiences, strengths, learning needs, and levels of access to resources. As a future teacher, I need to recognize those differences while still maintaining high expectations for every student.
Another important takeaway from this course is the importance of helping students develop a positive mathematical mindset. Many students begin to believe that they are either “good at math” or “bad at math,” especially when they have struggled with a concept in the past. As a future teacher, I want to help change this way of thinking by showing students that mathematical ability can grow through practice, persistence, and learning from mistakes.
