My mathematical journey: Glows & grows

Discover my personal path through mathematics, highlighting moments of triumph and the challenges that have shaped my understanding and teaching philosophy. This journey reflects the continuous process of learning and growth, essential for every mathematician.

My personal mathematical glows

I've experienced both moments of joy and frustration throughout my math learning. One of my greatest "glows" has been the realization that I can understand complex concepts by slowing down, practicing, and utilizing strategies that resonate with me. The feeling of pride when I not only solve a problem I once struggled with but also deeply understand the underlying methods is incredibly rewarding.

Embracing my mathematical grows

A significant "grow" for me has been building confidence when facing unexpected or challenging problems. I used to get discouraged when immediate understanding eluded me or when I made mistakes. I've learned that needing extra time doesn't signify a lack of math skills. Instead, these moments teach me what I need to practice and how to gain deeper understanding from challenges and errors. These experiences have instilled in me the value of encouragement and productive struggle, shaping me into a more patient learner and future educator.

Hopes for my future mathematicians

For my future students, I envision their biggest "glows" in math to be self-confidence and determination. I want them to feel secure in their ability to understand math, comfortable sharing their ideas, asking questions, and exploring various approaches. A crucial "grow" I aim to help them overcome is the misconception that speed equates to success in math, or the fear of making mistakes. I want to guide students who become discouraged by difficult problems to embrace challenges with a positive outlook, maintain focus, and see obstacles as opportunities for improvement. Every student should leave my classroom believing, "I may not understand it yet, but I can learn it."

"The journey of mathematical learning is a process where both triumphs and setbacks are essential for growth."
